Federated WordPress Repository Project Loses Key Contributor Joost de Valk

Joost de Valk, the creator of Yoast SEO, has announced that he is leaving the FAIR project, an initiative connected with the Linux Foundation that aimed to build an independent repository for WordPress plugins and themes.

The project was created as an alternate mechanism for developers to host and distribute plugins and themes outside of the official WordPress repository. However, the effort struggled to acquire the industry backing required to proceed further, prompting de Valk to withdraw from his position.

Background Of the FAIR Project

The FAIR project was launched in mid-2025, following a big debate in the WordPress ecosystem. Matt Mullenweg updated WP Engine's Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) plugin in the official WordPress plugin repository with his own modified version. When a duplicate version of a software project is created, this step, known as producing a "fork," occurs.

Along with that shift, WP Engine and many of its clients were denied access to the official WordPress.org repository and related update services. Many members of the WordPress community reacted strongly to the decision, which highlighted a significant structural issue: the ecosystem's reliance on a single central source. Because of this worry, conversations began regarding decentralizing the plugin and theme distribution mechanism. The proposed solution was a federated network of self-hosted repositories that could collaborate rather than depending on a single central source.

Joost de Valk’s Role In The Initiative

As a result of these debates, the FAIR project was developed as a possible option to implement a decentralized paradigm. Joost de Valk was closely involved with the project from the start. He helped explain why alternative repositories may benefit the WordPress ecosystem and played a key role in initiating the endeavor.

As a co-founder, he helped to develop the project and transfer it to a neutral governance structure through the Linux Foundation. The goal was to develop an open system that would lessen dependency on a single central repository while increasing trust and dependability in software delivery.

Reasons For Stepping Away

Despite its early enthusiasm, the initiative struggled to secure funding. In a recent statement, de Valk noted that interactions with hosting firms and other significant stakeholders in the WordPress ecosystem revealed a reluctance to invest in the project.

He clarified that the hesitation was not necessarily due to company support for the current scenario. Instead, participating in the project would necessitate a financial commitment as well as entering a politically sensitive scenario within the WordPress community.

According to de Valk, committing to FAIR would require companies to accept costs, potential conflicts, and certain risks. These factors appear to have discouraged many organizations from providing the support needed to develop the project into a stable and sustainable platform.

Although de Valk did not specify the political tensions, many observers believe they are related to Matt Mullenweg's continuing fight with WP Engine. For hosting providers and companies in the WordPress ecosystem, publicly supporting a project like FAIR may be viewed as taking sides in the issue.

For hosting providers and WordPress-related businesses, publicly supporting a project like FAIR may be interpreted as taking sides in the dispute.

FAIR Project Responds

Following de Valk's declaration, the FAIR project issued a statement appreciating his choice but confirming that funding issues remain a significant impediment.

However, the project highlighted that it will continue to function autonomously. The developers also stressed that FAIR was never intended to be simply about WordPress. Instead, the overarching purpose was to address software supply-chain security concerns throughout the technology industry. The project’s statement highlighted several key challenges it aims to solve, including secure distribution of software packages, decentralized infrastructure, and systems that allow developers to verify the origin and integrity of software updates.

Relevance Of Future Regulations

The FAIR team also mentioned impending rules that may raise the necessity of such solutions. One example is the Cyber Resilience Act, which is set to take effect in December 2027. Under this rule, software companies must demonstrate enhanced security measures throughout the supply chain. This includes determining where software comes from, scanning for security flaws, and ensuring transparent update processes.

According to the FAIR project, its architecture was created with these requirements in mind. The project seeks to enable future regulatory compliance by creating a decentralized distribution system with built-in verification and trust mechanisms.

What Happens Next

Although the FAIR initiative will continue, Joost de Valk's departure may diminish its prominence among the WordPress community. De Valk has long been one of the most well-known personalities in ecology, and his participation drew attention to the initiative.

Without his active participation, the project may face new hurdles in drawing contributors and industry backing. However, the FAIR team emphasized that they are still open to collaboration and invite developers, hosting providers, and other ecosystem leaders to join.

For the time being, the initiative's future is questionable. Much may rely on how the broader WordPress ecosystem matures and whether industry participants become more willing to embrace decentralized solutions after the present community conflicts are addressed
