Future of AGI in SEO

Google’s Use of AI and SGE Transforming Search

There are changes on the horizon that all SEOs should be aware of that are also closely related to AI.

Search Generative Experience (SGE) is now renamed to AI overviews, and Gemini are already changing how people get their information.

Google’s Search Generative Experience/AI Overviews

Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, has said that SGE is the future of Search.

SGI started as an experiment that could be opted into at labs.google.com, which is now in Search in some countries, with a new name, AI overviews. They can have several different components, or a combination of them, including:

It is a new approach to search results.

Unlike traditional search, which presents a list of links, SGE synthesizes information from trusted sources, providing summarized, actionable answers directly on the SERP.

It is an experimental search experience that uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to provide users with quick and clear overviews of search topics, without having to click on individual webpages.

This can help with a variety of tasks –

  • Finding answers
  • Discovering topic overviews
  • Summarizing key takeaways
  • Getting how-to instructions

Google SGE is more suited to answering specific questions and relaying factual information.

SGE was designed as a customized integration of generative AI into Search, rooted in Search’s core quality and safety systems.

Carousels of Websites

Web carousels provide a way to group related content into one tactile space- saving precious website real estate in the process. They are also known as sliders, galleries, and slideshows. Web carousels let you display text, graphics, images, and even video in one interactive, “sliding” block.

They are a great design option for grouping content and ideas, enabling you to form visual relationships between specific pieces of content.

They are the helpful content carousels, as they generally contain the type of content. These carousels are appearing in regular searches and also in Google Assistant responses. You may see carousels peppered throughout search labelled as “Perspectives”, “Forum Discussions”, and other labels.

Google Gemini

In early 2024, Bard was renamed to Gemini

Gemini is Google’s generative AI model that powers SGE. It uses advanced algorithms for understanding user intent, connecting data across multiple sources, and delivering contextual and personalized search results.

Gemini is also the name of the language model behind the system. It is essentially everything that is AI at Google.

Gemini, the chatbot, is not a search engine. But people would likely use it as one. It is a way to get information, and the more it improves, the more helpful it becomes. Gemini will become Google Assistant, and be available at a quick touch or voice command on most phones that can pop up over top of other apps.

In February of 2024, Google quietly announced an upgrade to Gemini called Gemini 1.5, which gives it an entirely new architecture based on something called a Mixture of Experts model.

Gemini 1.5 greatly improves Google’s AI capabilities across the board, creating a framework for them to continue to improve at a fast rate.

DeepMind says that the type of MoE model they use for Gemini is a brand-new version of MoE. The changes made to Gemini made it significantly more efficient, accurate and better able to understand the data it trains on.

Availability of Gemini 2.0 brings advanced multimodal capabilities, enhancing search with advanced AI that processes text, images, and other data for smarter results. SGE combines traditional search with AI-driven summaries, offering clear and actionable insights instead of just a list of links.

For example, a search for “what are the best hybrid cars” yields an AI overview outlining top-ranked cars as well as key points about those cars, and points to consider when choosing a hybrid vehicle.

Google’s Search Generative Experience, powered by Gemini, marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of search. It challenges businesses to rethink the way they approach visibility, relevance, and user engagement. While these changes may feel disruptive, they also present opportunities to embrace smarter content strategies, deeper audience connections, and innovative advertising formats.

Businesses that resist change risk fading into obscurity. However, those willing to adopt by focusing on authority, quality, and contextual alignment would find themselves thriving in a landscape that rewards intent-driven solutions over outdated tactics.

Business Integration

Google’s earnings call mentioned that one of Gemini’s strengths is business integration.

Eventually, seeing it will get easier and easier for businesses to not only integrate Google’s AI capabilities, but also make money from it.

Google Gemini showcases better performance than GPT-4 in different benchmarks like coding, speech recognition and document and infographic interpretation. Businesses can avail Gemini in the Gemini Ultra, which you can access through Gemini Advanced. However, the most useful offering by Google Gemini for business operations is Gemini for Google Workspace, which helps you leverage the capabilities of Gemini in the Google Workspace and make the most of your preferred productivity tools.
